Forget about New Year resolutions!

new beginnings Jan 2014I hope you all had a great start of the year.

I don’t know about you but I am always looking forward to a new year, to new beginnings. It seems that we are given the chance to start again with a clean slate. In a way it is exactly that! It is the best time to turn a page, reflect on all the achievements of the year gone, let go of the disappointments of anything not yet achieved, and get busy setting new, exciting goals.

So what usually happens in January? You are back at work after a couple of weeks enjoying your family and having fun with your friends. You feel optimistic and decide it is time to change your life for the better... and this time you mean it! What did you promise yourself to give up, or do less of, or do more of?

It is mid-January now. How are you getting on with your resolutions? I hope you are doing well and if you have already broken one or two of your resolutions, there is no need to worry as you can start again at a more appropriate time and with a different, more empowered mindset.

Albert Einstein said: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Maybe it is time to change the way you do things and focus on what you really want to achieve this year.

The first and most important step is to know what you would love to create and manifest as a reality in your life. You need to be able to imagine the end result. That alone is obviously not enough. It would be like dreaming and hoping your dreams will come true just because you asked the Universe... once! You have to imagine repeatedly you have reached your destination, you have to imagine what it would look like, what you would feel, what you would hear, what people would say to you, you have to believe it can happen, focus on the result, put all your energy into achieving the outcome, and take the obvious actions which have allowed you to get there.

Do not worry if you fail at some point. It is not real failure, you have only learned a way to not make it work, so use the lesson or feedback and get back on track until you are successful.

Worries, doubts, or fear might also get in the way even when you think you are being so positive. It’s ok. Acknowledge them - don’t even try to ignore them as they will just be amplified and create more stress - recognise what you are feeling and use a strategy which works for you like breathing exercises, meditation, self-hypnosis, yoga, talking about it, getting more sleep, smiling, hugging a loved one, or go out for a walk to clear your head and observe nature, ... Remember that what you are feeling is not real as the events you are anxious about have not even happened yet. So don’t give power to unresourceful emotions or states, keep your energy to create what you love instead of what you do not love. After all, FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real!

You must take personal responsabilityNew Year resolutions do not work: that’s right, they tend to be merely wishes you seldom follow through and you end up feeling guilty about breaking the promises you made to yourself! So do yourself a favour, change the way you think about them and change the result you get. And always go for what you love!

I wish you all the very best for 2014, it is still early days so plenty of time to think of what you would love to create and achieve by December. Happy outcomes!
